Why Overland Algeria?

Algeria is one of North Africa’s last true expedition destinations. While Morocco has become a classic overlander route and Tunisia sees regular motorhome traffic, Algeria still feels raw, remote, and genuinely adventurous.

The country is enormous—Africa’s largest by land area—and much of that space is pure Sahara. Days of driving can pass between major settlements, especially south of the Atlas Mountains, where the landscape turns into endless stone plateaus, dunes, and isolated fuel stations.

For history lovers, Algeria offers remarkable contrasts. In the north, Roman cities such as Timgad and Djemila rival famous sites elsewhere in the Mediterranean, yet receive only a fraction of the visitors. Constantine clings dramatically to cliffs above deep gorges, while Algiers mixes Ottoman, French colonial, and modern North African influences.

For expedition travelers, Algeria offers something increasingly rare: genuine remoteness.

Route: Annaba – Constantine – Algiers – Oran – Tlemcen
Distance: Approx. 1,400 km
Road type: Paved highways
Fuel: Easy availability

This is Algeria’s most practical overland route, linking the major northern cities along the Mediterranean corridor.

Highlights include Constantine, known as the “City of Bridges,” where dramatic suspension bridges span deep ravines, creating one of the country’s most memorable urban landscapes.

Algiers offers a completely different atmosphere—whitewashed hillsides, Ottoman alleyways in the Casbah, French boulevards, and lively waterfront districts.

Further west, Oran feels more Mediterranean and less traditional, while Tlemcen provides Moorish architecture and historic heritage.

Best for travelers focused on culture and easier logistics.

Route: Algiers – Ghardaïa – El Menia – In Salah – Tamanrasset
Distance: 2,000+ km

This is the classic Algeria expedition route.

Leaving the coast, the scenery changes dramatically. The fertile north gives way to increasingly dry plateaus before the desert takes over completely.

Ghardaïa is one of the most fascinating stops—a fortified oasis settlement in the M’zab Valley, famous for its distinctive architecture and maze-like streets.

South of here, distances become serious.

Fuel stations grow farther apart. Traffic thins out. Temperatures rise sharply.

By the time you approach Tamanrasset, you’re deep in Tuareg country, surrounded by volcanic-looking mountains and vast desert emptiness.

Highly restricted.

Generally unsuitable.

Niger / Mauritania

Possible in theory, difficult in practice due to remoteness and security.

Driving Conditions

Northern Algeria feels relatively straightforward.

Expect:

  • modern highways
  • toll roads

Southern Algeria is completely different.

Challenges include:

  • fuel planning
  • long isolated stretches
  • desert winds

Bring:

  • spare tires
  • extra water

Mobile networks:

  • Mobilis
  • Djezzy
  • Ooredoo

Coverage fades significantly in remote desert regions.

Albania is one of Europe’s most underrated overlanding destinations. It offers a rare mix of rugged mountain terrain, quiet Mediterranean beaches, and a travel culture that still feels authentic and untouched.

The country is anchored by the dramatic Albanian Alps, where remote valleys and rough tracks provide real off-road adventure. At the same time, the southern coastline rivals neighboring Greece in beauty—without the crowds or high prices.

  • Remote, untouched landscapes (Hindu Kush, Wakhan Corridor)
  • Deep historical and cultural significance
  • Extreme frontier travel experience

👉 Reality check: This is not currently a standard overlanding destination and requires constant risk assessment.

Backpacking Ukraine

Backpacking Ukraine is not a normal backpacking destination in 2026 because the country continues to face the effects of war and security risks. So the honest answer is:

👉 I would not recommend Ukraine right now as a leisure backpacking trip.

This isn’t about the country lacking appeal—Ukraine has historically been an excellent destination with beautiful cities, culture, mountains, coast, and great value—but current safety conditions make tourism fundamentally different.

⚠️ Current Reality (Important)

Conditions can vary significantly by region and change quickly. Risks may include:

  • Missile/drone attacks far from front lines
  • Curfews / alerts / disrupted infrastructure
  • Power or transport interruptions
  • Restricted areas
  • Insurance complications
  • Government travel advisories strongly warning against travel

👉 Always check your nationality’s official travel advisory and humanitarian/security updates.

Ukraine also offered:

  • Affordable mountain travel
  • Village culture
  • Hiking and skiing

💸 Why It Was Great for Backpackers

Historically:

  • Very affordable
  • Big and varied
  • Friendly people
  • Less touristy than Western Europe
  • Strong train culture

⚖️ Honest Verdict for 2026

Not ideal for leisure backpacking because:

  • Safety uncertainty
  • Ethical/logistical complexity
  • Stressful travel environment
  • Rapidly changing conditions

If you specifically need to go:

Travel for family, humanitarian, journalism, or essential reasons is a different context and requires serious planning.

🧭 Better Alternatives Right Now (Similar Appeal)

If what attracts you is cheap, authentic, Eastern European, interesting cities + culture, I’d recommend:

  • Poland – easiest substitute
  • Romania – castles + mountains
  • Moldova – offbeat post-Soviet feel
  • Slovakia – mountains + value
  • Georgia – cheap, adventurous, warm hospitality

Backpacking Russia

Backpacking Russia used to be one of the world’s great long-route adventures: huge cities, epic train journeys, wild landscapes, and deep cultural history. Right now, however, it is a difficult and high-friction destination for many international backpackers because of geopolitical tensions, visa complexity, transport/payment restrictions, and rapidly changing conditions.

So the honest answer in 2026:

👉 Possible for some travelers, but not currently an easy mainstream backpacking recommendation.

⚠️ Current Reality (Important)

Before planning Russia, travelers often need to consider:

  • Visa rules that vary by nationality and can change
  • Flight route limitations from many countries
  • International bank card/payment restrictions
  • Insurance limitations
  • Political/security risks and changing advisories
  • Language barrier stronger than much of Europe

👉 You should always check your own government travel advisory and current entry rules before planning.
