Why Overland Algeria?
Algeria is one of North Africa’s last true expedition destinations. While Morocco has become a classic overlander route and Tunisia sees regular motorhome traffic, Algeria still feels raw, remote, and genuinely adventurous.
The country is enormous—Africa’s largest by land area—and much of that space is pure Sahara. Days of driving can pass between major settlements, especially south of the Atlas Mountains, where the landscape turns into endless stone plateaus, dunes, and isolated fuel stations.
For history lovers, Algeria offers remarkable contrasts. In the north, Roman cities such as Timgad and Djemila rival famous sites elsewhere in the Mediterranean, yet receive only a fraction of the visitors. Constantine clings dramatically to cliffs above deep gorges, while Algiers mixes Ottoman, French colonial, and modern North African influences.
For expedition travelers, Algeria offers something increasingly rare: genuine remoteness.
Main Overlanding Routes
1. Northern Algeria Route

Route: Annaba – Constantine – Algiers – Oran – Tlemcen
Distance: Approx. 1,400 km
Road type: Paved highways
Fuel: Easy availability
This is Algeria’s most practical overland route, linking the major northern cities along the Mediterranean corridor.
Highlights include Constantine, known as the “City of Bridges,” where dramatic suspension bridges span deep ravines, creating one of the country’s most memorable urban landscapes.
Algiers offers a completely different atmosphere—whitewashed hillsides, Ottoman alleyways in the Casbah, French boulevards, and lively waterfront districts.
Further west, Oran feels more Mediterranean and less traditional, while Tlemcen provides Moorish architecture and historic heritage.
Best for travelers focused on culture and easier logistics.
2. Sahara Crossing Route
Route: Algiers – Ghardaïa – El Menia – In Salah – Tamanrasset
Distance: 2,000+ km
This is the classic Algeria expedition route.
Leaving the coast, the scenery changes dramatically. The fertile north gives way to increasingly dry plateaus before the desert takes over completely.
Ghardaïa is one of the most fascinating stops—a fortified oasis settlement in the M’zab Valley, famous for its distinctive architecture and maze-like streets.
South of here, distances become serious.
Fuel stations grow farther apart. Traffic thins out. Temperatures rise sharply.
By the time you approach Tamanrasset, you’re deep in Tuareg country, surrounded by volcanic-looking mountains and vast desert emptiness.
3. Tassili n’Ajjer Expedition
This is Algeria’s most visually spectacular overlanding zone.
Tassili n’Ajjer is a surreal desert plateau of giant sandstone arches, canyons, and prehistoric rock art sites.
Djanet serves as the gateway town.
Expect:

- serious self-sufficiency

Most practical entry route.
